Google's New Code Comprehension Interview: What It Tests and How to Prepare (2026)
Google just changed their software engineering interview format. The new code comprehension round tests AI fluency, prompt engineering, and debugging — not LeetCode. Here's exactly what to expect and how to prepare.

Google quietly announced a major change to their interview process this month. Starting in the second half of 2026, software engineering candidates will face a new round called "code comprehension" — and it tests something completely different from anything Google has asked before.
Here is exactly what changed, what the new round tests, and how to prepare for it.
What Google Changed
According to an internal document reported by Business Insider, Google is piloting a new format for software engineering interviews at junior and mid-level roles in the US, beginning with teams in Google Cloud and the platforms and devices unit.
The new round is called "code comprehension." Instead of writing code from scratch, candidates are given an existing codebase and asked to read it, identify bugs, improve performance, and suggest fixes — all while using an AI assistant to help them.
The AI assistant candidates will use is Google's own Gemini.
Brian Ong, Google's VP of Recruiting, described the change as updating their process "to be more reflective of how our teams are operating in the AI era."
The reason this makes sense: three out of every four lines of new code written at Google are now generated by AI. Testing whether candidates can write algorithms by hand no longer reflects the actual job.
What the Code Comprehension Round Actually Tests
This is the part most prep guides will get wrong — so read carefully.
The code comprehension round does not primarily test whether you can fix code. It tests three specific things:
1. Prompt engineering
Can you give precise, targeted instructions to an AI assistant? Generic prompts like "fix this code" score low. Specific prompts that isolate a problem area, provide context, and ask for focused help score high. Google is explicitly evaluating what they call "AI fluency" — and your prompts are the main signal.
2. Output validation
When the AI gives you a suggestion, do you accept it blindly or verify it? This is arguably the most important skill being tested. AI assistants make mistakes — they suggest suboptimal approaches, miss edge cases, and sometimes hallucinate solutions that look correct but are not. Strong candidates catch these mistakes. Weak candidates copy and paste.
3. Debugging skill
Can you read unfamiliar code, understand what it is supposed to do, and identify where it breaks? This is traditional code comprehension — but combined with the two skills above, not in isolation.
The old Google interview asked: can you implement an algorithm?
The new Google interview asks: can you work with AI to fix a production system?
These are completely different skills.
Why This Is Bigger Than Just Google
Google is not alone. Meta began piloting a similar AI-enabled coding round in October 2025. Their version runs for 60 minutes in a CoderPad environment with an AI assistant built in, and evaluates candidates on problem-solving, code quality, and verification.
OpenAI president Greg Brockman has noted that AI now writes 80% of code across the industry, up from 20% not long ago.
The pattern is clear. The top AI companies are redesigning their interviews around a new question: can you work effectively with AI as a tool? Not just can you code without it.
This has an important implication for anyone in a software engineering job today, not just people interviewing. The engineers who thrive in the next five years will be the ones who can direct AI systems, validate their output, and debug what they produce. This is a different skill from traditional software engineering — and it is not automatically picked up just by using Copilot or ChatGPT on the job.
What a Strong Code Comprehension Answer Looks Like
Here is an example of the type of problem Google's code comprehension round presents, and the difference between a weak and strong response.
The broken code:

The symptom: Users report the system always says "I don't have enough information to answer" even when the documents clearly contain the answer.
Weak candidate behavior:
- Sends a vague prompt to the AI: "why is this function not working?"
- Accepts the AI's first suggestion without checking it
- Focuses on the wrong layer — tries to fix the LLM model instead of the prompt
Strong candidate behavior:
- Sends a targeted prompt: "The retrieved documents are stored in context_docs but I don't see them being passed to the LLM prompt. Is that the bug?"
- Verifies the AI's suggested fix by tracing through the logic manually before applying it
- Catches it when the AI over-engineers the solution by suggesting a full template library when a two-line fix works
- Produces a clean fix that injects the retrieved documents into the prompt
The bug is that context_docs is retrieved but never included in the prompt. The LLM correctly says it lacks information — because it was never given any.

How to Prepare for the Code Comprehension Round
Most existing interview prep platforms are not built for this format. LeetCode is algorithm practice. Mock interview platforms test system design and behavioral questions. Nothing is specifically designed to simulate reading broken code and using AI to debug it — which is exactly what Google is now testing.
Here is what effective preparation looks like:
Practice reading broken code, not writing new code.
The skill being tested is diagnosis — can you look at an existing system and understand what is wrong with it? This is different from the blank-slate problem-solving that most interview prep focuses on. Practice by taking working systems, introducing bugs, and asking yourself to find them before turning to the AI.
Practice prompt engineering deliberately.
Most engineers use AI tools passively — they type a vague question and see what comes back. For the Google interview, your prompts are being evaluated. Practice writing prompts that are specific, scoped, and targeted. The difference between "fix my code" and "the context_docs variable is retrieved on line 3 but I don't see it referenced in the prompt on line 5 — is that causing the output to ignore the documents?" is enormous. One of these scores well. The other does not.
Practice catching AI mistakes.
AI assistants make characteristic mistakes. They over-engineer solutions. They miss the root cause and fix symptoms. They suggest approaches that look right but introduce new bugs. Practice using AI on broken code problems with the explicit goal of finding at least one mistake in whatever the AI suggests before applying it.
Focus on production AI systems.
The broken code in Google's interview is not a data structures problem. It is a production AI system — a RAG pipeline, an LLM agent, an evaluation framework. If you have not worked with these systems directly, you need hands-on practice before the interview. Familiarity with how RAG systems fail, how agent loops break, and how evaluation pipelines produce misleading metrics is essential.
The Bigger Picture for Software Engineers
Google's announcement is not just a change to an interview format. It is a signal about what software engineering actually means in 2026.
The job title "software engineer" is converging with "AI engineer." The skills that make someone an excellent software engineer today — reading unfamiliar codebases, debugging production systems, understanding failure modes — are the same skills that make someone an excellent AI engineer. The difference is the systems involved.
Engineers who can read an RAG pipeline the way they used to read a distributed systems codebase, who can debug a hallucinating agent the way they used to debug a memory leak, who can evaluate AI output the way they used to write unit tests — these are the engineers who will thrive in the next hiring cycle.
The interview format just changed to reflect that. The preparation needs to change too.
